From the colorful houses to the castle-like structures, Collioure is a perfect blend of bold architecture and cheerful tones. It makes total sense that artists like Henri Matisse and André Derain spent years here, inspired by the scenery and laying the groundwork for what would become the Fauvism art movement.
Our visit started with surprisingly easy parking in a public lot. It happened to be free that day, which felt like a small win. We grabbed gelato from a kiosk we spotted right away. It was the perfect treat while we wandered through the narrow cobblestone alleyways as a family. Each of us got pulled into a different shop for our own reasons.
My dad found a Spanish pottery store and picked out a planter for our garden. The woman running the shop was also the artist behind every piece. She was so kind and asked all about our move from the U.S. to France. That planter will always remind me of this day.
My sister found a pair of gold hoop earrings at a little jewelry shop, and my mom picked out a postcard to send to her aunt back home. We had a dinner plan that evening, but if you are hungry, I reccomend looking for something right along the water, most of the restaurants have their menus posted outside so you can stroll along and pick whatever sounds best. Lots of them specialize in fresh seafood and local Catalan dishes.
Later, we sat by the edge of the sea where the shore crashes gently against the rocks and walkway. A man was playing guitar for his wife and for people passing by. It was one of those simple, beautiful moments that felt like a movie. We agreed that next time we visit, we’re bringing art supplies to paint by the sea. We saw a few others doing just that, and you could tell they were pulled into the same creative energy that’s lived here for over a century. I felt it too.
This lovely little town is absolutely worth a visit. You can even reach it from Barcelona if you’re looking for a perfect day trip or weekend escape.
