Just 40 minutes outside of Cologne, sitting up on top of a hill overlooking the Rhine, is one of the most stunning hotels I’ve stayed at since moving to Germany: the Steigenberger Icon Grandhotel & Spa Petersberg.

I went for a weekend getaway, and it delivered on every level.

A Grand Arrival

From the moment I walked in, it was clear this wasn’t a typical hotel stay. The lobby greeted us with little cakes and fruit-infused water, a small touch that set the tone for the whole weekend. The hotel itself has serious history behind it. It once served as the official guest house of the Federal Republic of Germany, hosting heads of state and important political meetings over the years. You can feel that legacy the moment you walk through the halls.

The Room

The room itself was incredible. Elegant, comfortable, and clearly well thought out, it was the kind of space that made me want to stay in and do absolutely nothing, which is exactly what a weekend getaway should feel like. Not a detail was spared. The mini fridge was fully stocked with high quality snacks and refreshments, perfect for my late night snacking habit.

Service & Room Service

The service across the board was five stars. Every interaction with staff felt genuinely warm, not just polished. And the room service? A perfect 10 out of 10. We ordered the vadouvan risotto, and it might be one of the best hotel dishes I’ve had.

Daytime at the Hotel

The daytime scene here was such a fun surprise. There was a live DJ and an Aperol bar with snacks set up outside, overlooking the Rhine, obviously. I also had to get a German pretzel while soaking in the view. It’s the kind of afternoon that doesn’t feel like it should exist at a hotel, in the best way.

Exploring the Hotel

Beyond the room, we spent time just wandering. The ballroom was worth checking out on its own, and the art throughout the hotel was genuinely impressive, the kind of place where every hallway feels worth exploring. Between the history, the architecture, and the little details tucked into every corner, it’s easy to spend an afternoon just walking around and taking it all in. It seemed as if they were preparing for a wedding in a couple of days, but they still allowed for guests to explore the property freely.

Final Thoughts

If you’re based in Cologne, or anywhere nearby, and looking for a weekend escape that doesn’t require much travel time, I can’t recommend Steigenberger Icon Grandhotel & Spa Petersberg enough. Between the views, the history, the food, and the service, it felt like a proper escape without ever leaving the region.
